Katnook Prodigy Shiraz is one of the Estate's iconic wines, the other being Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon.
Prodigy was first produced in 1997 from young vines and this wine won Australia's coveted Jimmy Watson trophy. Prodigy Shiraz is a world class Shiraz style, which captures the essence of Coonawarra. These regional characters are an alluring combination of white pepper fruit and anise, with depth and elegance.
Parcels of fruit destined for Prodigy Shiraz were harvested from sections of Katnook Estate's vineyard which consistently produce intense flavours and fine tannins.
After fermentation in small batches, the wine matures in predominantly new American barriques for 30 months. Extended time in barrel is integral to Prodigy's complexity and style. Only the best barrels are included in the final Prodigy blend.
Winemaker Wayne Stehbens says 'Although Coonawarra's reputation as the ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon is well known, it also produces world class Shiraz. The variety is perhaps more challenging in the Coonawarra but when it all comes together Coonawarra Shiraz truly comes into its own,' says Wayne Stehbens.
It is an opulent wine with heady dark berry fruit characters combined with hints of licorice and roasted coffee finishing with a well-balanced fine tannin structure and weight.
Suggested cellaring potential is medium to long 10 to 20 years.
